Recital Season Begins~

Recitals, oh the joy on all of those little faces.  They work so hard to learn all of the steps, get the timing just right, and make their parents proud.  All year long they practice their twirls.  Then the big night comes and the lights go up, and it's their turn to shine.  What do little girls love almost as much as dancing?  Well flowers of course!

That is why The Secret Garden specializes in making those little dancing queens smile.  We stock up on multiple colors of pastel roses and flowers to fill a little bouquet just for them.  We showcase our wares every year at The Lincoln Theater when The Dance Centre has their recital.  Here are some shots from our booth last year.

Our basic presentation bouquets can be custom made just for your little one.  You can choose the colors, the flowers, and let us do the rest.  This year we have added a new gift.  We call her "Tiny Dancer".  She is just $10.00 with a water pick on the bottom or $15.00 in a small glass vase.  You can call and order one and we will get her all made up for the big night.

We also have stuffed animals, balloons, and much more.  Stop in and see our full selection at:
1215 E. Pershing Rd. in Decatur.
Or give us a call at: 875-9038 so we can make something just for you.

How do you say Thank You?

A little history according to our friends at Holiday Insight:

"When :
Administrative Professional's Day: April 27, 2011
Administrative Professional's Week is celebrated:: April 24-30, 2011

National Professional Secretaries Week and National Secretary's Day was created  in 1952 through the work of Harry F. Klemfuss of Young and Rubicam. Klemfuss recognized the importance and value of the position to a company or business. His goal was to encourage more women to become secretaries. Using his skill and experience in public relations, Klemfuss, promoted the values and importance of the job of secretaries. In doing so, he also created the holiday in recognition of the importance of secretaries.
Today,  the title is changing and evolving. But, the recognition is equally important. There are two new terms in use today. They are "Administrative Professionals" and "Executive Admins". The two names sometimes mean different roles and responsibilities to different companies. Both are broader terms, that encompass more positions than the original "Secretary" role.
The name change recognizes and acknowledges that the role has changed significantly since 1952, and for the better at that. And in Harry Klemfuss' day, these postions were the realm of women. Today, you find some males in these positions.
The most common ways of recognizing your Administrative Professional(s) today are:
  • Flowers
  • Cards, often with shopping gift certificates
  • Take them to lunch
  • Candies
  • Assorted Gift Baskets"
How do you say Thank You to someone who helps you daily?  A person that juggles the phones, filing, all your appointments, and never lets you forget a special occasion?  Chances are your Administrative Professional does this and so much more on a daily basis.  So how do you thank them for everything they do for you every day of the year?  Simple, say it with flowers, or a great gift from The Secret Garden.

Introducing DIY Special Events

Weddings are one of the best things about being a florist.  Helping the bride find just the right flowers to express her unique style is an amazing experience.  So you can imagine our disappointment when more and more brides were deciding to go the Do It Yourself route and not let us share in their special day.  So we had to come up with a new way to take part in special days.  We are proud to announce the creation of DIY Special Events.

Our Mission Statement:  DIY Special Events is committed to providing the freshest flowers for your event.  We want your special event to be one to remember forever.  Backed with years of knowledge as a retail florist we can help you create the day of your dreams.

What We Offer:  We offer a wide variety of fresh cut flowers at bulk prices.  This allows you to stay within your budget for your big event. Your flowers will be inspected for quality, processed in floral solution, and stored in our floral cooler. We will provide you with the care and handling information needed to keep your flowers fresh.

Packaging:  Your flowers will arrive in bulk packaging.  You will need to process the flowers upon receiving them.  This may include removing rose thorns, allowing flowers to open, and keeping the flowers in floral solution.  Some flowers require more time to open and we will provide you with that information before your order.

Free Consultation:  A free ordering consultation is provided.  We suggest you call us at 217-875-9038 at least 90 days before your wedding to make your appointment.  At this consultation we will get the list of flowers you wish to order, write you out a price quote, and answer questions about our services.  We will also provide you with a checklist so that you will have everything you need to care for your flowers.  All orders must be paid in full at least 3 weeks before the arrival date of the flowers.  We will notify you of your order date at this consultation.

Paid Consultations:  For a fee, you can schedule an appointment with one of our bridal consultants.  We will work with you to determine the flower count you will need for your event.  By going over the bouquets, center pieces, and your needs we can provide a flower count and estimate for you.

Hybrid Weddings:  This is the perfect package for an event with many layers.  For example, we can complete your wedding and church flowers, and you can complete your reception work.  We have several levels of hybrid weddings and can discuss these at your free consultation.  We suggest you schedule this consultation at least 4 to 6 months prior to your wedding day.  If you choose this option a deposit will be required to hold your date.

Visit our website at DIYspecialevents.com or our blog for more details, ideas, and flower selection.

Easter Lily Care

Easter Lilies make a wonderful gift this time of year.  Chances are you will receive one or you may buy one for yourself.  Here are some tips on keeping your lily healthy so you can enjoy it all season.
  • Keep the soil moist but be sure not to over water.  To check your water level simply put a lead pencil in the soil, if it comes out dry it is time to water.  The top soil will dry faster then the soil around the roots so this is a good way to see how moist the soil is.
  • Cool steady temperatures will make your lily last longer.  Temperatures around 60 to 65 degrees are best.  Avoid warm and cold drafts from doors, vents, heaters, and windows.
  • Your lily will bloom best in bright, but indirect sunlight.  Setting the lily in the window may "scorch" the blooms or the foliage.  This will make the lily bloom out faster and can give it long term damage and prevent it from re-blooming.
  • Remove the pollen, yellow anthers, from your lily.  This will prolong the life of the blooms and help protect clothing, table cloths, and more from the yellowish stains caused by pollen.
  • For tips on transplanting your lily when the time comes read this great article.
So as you can see proper care will help keep your Easter Lily lasting longer and insure it looks beautiful on Easter morning.  As a florist we will insure that we take good care of your Easter Lily before it even arrives at your door.  We will monitor the water, light, and temperatures for you.  Not to insult the big box stores but when you see them sitting in the doorway and the pots are dry you know that they are not receiving the proper care.  You may pay a little more at a florist for your poinsettia but you will get more in return.  Remember the old saying, "you get what you pay for."?  Well in this case that is 100% true.

Why are Roses so Expensive at Valentine's Day?

This is a question we will answer over and over again this Valentine's Day:
"Why are roses so expensive??"
The simple answer we give to most is, "supply and demand, we pay more at Valentine's Day so the customer has to pay more."  In truth the answer goes far beyond that.  It starts at the grower way back in November and December and it rolls forward to Valentine's Day and even a few weeks beyond.

True long stem roses, like we sell at The Secret Garden, take 6 to 8 weeks to grow.  This means that production of Valentine's roses starts in late November and early December down in Equador.
Because of this they trim the November and December crops early, creating a shortage that starts in those months and prices start to rise.

Now florists start to plan how many roses they want to have on hand and start sending orders into their suppliers.  The suppliers tell their suppliers, and those suppliers tell the growers.  The growers look at the crop growing and set a price based on the demand for the product.  Because roses are perishable and cannot be kept on hand for long periods of time it makes the supply harder to maintain.

You also have to factor in the growing conditions for the roses, the days are shorter and the temperatures are cooler.  This puts more energy into caring for the roses and making sure they are ready for the final cut before the big day arrives.

Now we get into the fun world of transportation.  The large supply of roses has to be moved into the parts of the world that demand the roses.  This requires more trucks, more drivers, and of course more gas.  Then when they arrive at the wholesalers it requires more people to process the flowers, sort the roses for delivery to the florists, and transport them to the locations.  As a florist we need to have more people on staff to handle the demand as well.  More people to answer the phone, design the arrangements, and of course deliver them to you.

You add all of this together and it's the perfect storm for increased prices.

But do not fret.  You can send your love beautiful flowers on Valentine's Day without breaking the bank.  Ask your florist for a mixed bouquet, add just a few roses to it if you like.  Maybe look for designs that feature spray roses, then you can have a larger amount of "roses" without the higher cost.  You may also want to go with her favorite color or flower and have your florist create a beautiful bouquet that is one of a kind.

If you do decide to go with roses, get the most for your money by providing the proper care after the roses arrive.  This will insure that you are enjoying the roses for days to come after the holiday.

We hope that this little article will help explain those higher prices you are bound to pay this Valentine's Day.  Remember to order your roses early, we recommend at least a week in advance.  This will guarantee fresh roses delivered to the one you love on that special day!

Arranging a Half Dozen Roses in 10 Easy Steps

Here is a short step by step guide to arranging 1/2 dozen roses in a vase.  This is just in time for Valentine's Day.  We sell roses in paper and boxes for the man on the go.  This will help you arrange them like a pro when they get into your home.
What you will need:
6 Long Stem Rose
1 Bunch of Babies Breath
6-8 Pieces of leather leaf
2-3 stems of salal leaf
Glass vase
Flower Food Packet
Florist Tape (optional)

1. Add your flower food to the water according to package directions.
2. You can grid the vase if you would like.  This will help keep the roses in place when you arrange them.

3. Remove any petals that may be bruised or spotted. This will make your roses more attractive in your arrangement.
It also can liven up roses that are starting to loose that fresh picked look.  You can do this days after the arrangement is made to spruce it up a little.

4. Trim your leather leaf at the bottom and remove any leaves that may fall into the water.  The leather leaf should measure 6" to 8" from tip to rim of vase.

5.  Take your Salal stems and place them in the vase.  For best results separate them into 3 pieces.  Add them in like the numbers on the clock at 3,6, & 9.

For an 8" vase your rose should measure about 20" long.  Trim your rose at an angle so that the water can travel up the stem easily.
Trim your best looking rose for the center of your vase.

6.  Add your first rose to the center of your vase.
7.  Cut the other 5 roses about 2" - 3" shorter then your main flower.  Remember to cut these at an angle as well.

8.  Add your remaining roses like you are filling in a clock.  The best positions are 2, 5, 7, 9. 12.  This will help create a nice shape for your arrangement.
Facing your roses outward from the center of the vase will create a fuller look to your arrangement.  Every flower head has a natural "forward", use this to help you position your flowers.

9.  Insert your longest piece of babies breath into the center of your vase.  Trim it if needed so that the tallest blooms are about 1/2 was up the bloom of your tallest rose.
You can tuck the babies breath between the roses to add color and shape to your arrangement.

10.  Take any remaining pieces of babies breath and fill in the places in your arrangement that need color and texture.

Your arrangement is now complete.  Remember to change the water and trim your roses to prolong the life.  For more rose care tips check out our article here.
If you like you can add a bow for a more finished look.  We hope that you have enjoyed our step by step and invite you to come back often for more great tips and tricks.

With Deep Sympathy ~ A Selection Guide

Selecting flowers for a funeral is never an easy task.  We hope that this article will help you select the perfect expression of your sympathy.

When you call your florist they are going to have several questions for you.  They will want to know if you want the flowers to go home with the family or be left at the graveside as a tribute.  They will ask you if you want fresh flowers or a potted plant.  These questions are just the start of your florist helping you find the best sentiment for you.

Let's talk about a few different types of arrangements that you will be asked about.  This will help you have a picture in your head when your florist starts talking about types of arrangements.

Casket Spray

Measures: Measurements will vary depending on the style and flowers.  Normally it will stretch 2-3 feet in length and just about 12-15 inches high.
Sender: This is arrangement is normally chosen by the immediate family and reflects the style and taste of the deceased.
Price Range:  A standard casket spray will start at $150 and increase in price as more flowers, or high end flowers are added.
Post Service: This piece will stay with the casket through and after the service.
Personalization: A beautiful ribbon can be added to the spray to denote the roles the deceased played in life.  For example, Father, Brother, Husband, Son.

Easel Spray:

Measure: About 4-5 feet tall
Sender: We find that family members prefer these arrangements along with businesses.  They are very large and make for a beautiful accent to the casket spray.
Price Range: You will find that a modest easel spray will start at $70.00 and increase in value as you add more, or higher end, flowers.
Post Service: These arrangements are normally left at the graveside.  This will bring comfort to friends and family who visit the deceased in the days after the funeral.
Personalize:  For family and friends you florist can add ribbons that denote your connection with the deceased.  For example, Sister or Friend.  These normally hang down a little past the lowest flower an excellent way to add a personal touch to the arrangement.

Funeral Mache

Measures: 2-3 feet tall
Sender:  This piece is popular to a wide spectrum of senders.  It is appropriate for anyone to send.
Price Range: A standard mache will start at around $55.00 and increase in price as you add more, or higher end flowers.
Post Service: This piece is normally created in a plastic or disposable container so it is ideal to leave at the graveside.  Again this will provide comfort for those who visit the graveside in the days that follow the service.
Personalization:  A beautiful bow can be added with a ribbon that denotes the relationship you had with the deceased.  For example, Mother or Wife.

Mixed Vase

Measures: The size of the vase will vary in size.  Your florist can help you decide what is best for your price range and taste.  When ordering online be sure to look for measurements to insure that you select the right size for your taste.
Sender: Anyone.  This is one of the more common requests we receive for a funeral.
Price Range: A vase price is one of the most flexible price scales.  Your florist can help you select the prices and styles that fit your budget.
Post Service:  This arrangement will normally be sent home with a family member or close friend.  You can even request that the vase go home with a preselected individual.
Personalization:  It is possible for us to add a personalized ribbon.  This is not always recommended but can be done to larger, fuller, vases.

Dish Gardens and House Plants

Measurements & Price:  This will vary depending on what you and your florist decide is best for you.  Price ranges of plants can start at around $30 and increase as the type of plant and container change.
Sender: Anyone.  This is another of the most popular items we send for funerals.
Post Service:  The plant you select can be sent home with a specific individual if you wish.  It is typically given to a close friend or family member.
Personalization: Again this is not always recommended but can be added to larger plants and dish gardens.

Fruit Basket

Measures:  A fruit or food basket will vary in size depending on the items in the basket.
Price:  Fruit basket prices will vary.  Your florist can help you choose the size that is right for you.  Our fruit baskets start at around $55 and increase in price as more food items are added.
Sender:  Anyone.  These are popular for businesses to send but we have had friends and family members request them as well.
Post Service:  These are wonderful to have around the house after the service.  When life is turned upside down trying to remember to eat can be difficult.  This will help the family in the days following the service.
Personalization: Typically we do not personalize this type of arrangement.  Depending on the size a nice ribbon would add a personal touch.

We hope that you find this article helpful when selecting a tribute for a loved one.  Over the next few weeks will post more articles in this series.

This little dandy was made today for a last minute bride.  We love it when people stop in for something like this.  Your wedding day will be a day you look back on with joy for years to come.  We hope that our flowers make you smile even then.  Simple yet elegant this bouquet has it all.  White roses are always beautiful but the mini red carnations make them POP!  The salal leaves make a wonderful collar around the bouquet.  The bouquet has a simple wrap with small pearl pins to hold the ribbon in place.  So beautiful yet the size and flower choices help hold the cost down.

Gearing up for another busy season

Mother's Day is on the way and we have already started the count down here at the store.  We are figuring out ways to say I love you, Thanks Mom, and Happy Mother's Day!  We have started designing this years unique arrangements.  These arrangements are exclusive to The Secret Garden and hand made by our designers.  This year we have decided to honor our Moms by naming the arrangements after them!
We will have, Linda's Loving Blooms, Betty's Touch of Elegance, Billie's Lady Bug Landing, and Evelyn's Butterfly Garden.  These designs will be of limited quantity and we suggest you order early!
Mother's Day is a day to tell your mom that you love and appreciate all she has done for you.  Mom's young and old look forward to all of those fun hand made crafts from kids and grandchildren.  If the day of Macaroni art are behind you we can help!
Mother's day had it's start in early greek times and found a home here in America over 150 years ago.  It has changed and evolved into one of the most loved Holidays of our time.   Here is the full story brought to you by 123holiday.net:
Contrary to popular belief, Mother's Day was not conceived and fine-tuned in the boardroom of Hallmark. The earliest tributes to mothers date back to the annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to Rhea, the mother of many deities, and to the offerings ancient Romans made to their Great Mother of Gods, Cybele. Christians celebrated this festival on the fourth Sunday in Lent in honor of Mary, mother of Christ. In England this holiday was expanded to include all mothers and was called Mothering Sunday.

In the United States, Mother's Day started nearly 150 years ago, when Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community, a cause she believed would be best advocated by mothers. She called it "Mother's Work Day."

Fifteen years later, Julia Ward Howe, a Boston poet, pacifist, suffragist, and author of the lyrics to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," organized a day encouraging mothers to rally for peace, since she believed they bore the loss of human life more harshly than anyone else.

In 1905 when Anna Jarvis died, her daughter, also named Anna, began a campaign to memorialize the life work of her mother. Legend has it that young Anna remembered a Sunday school lesson that her mother gave in which she said, "I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mother's day. There are many days for men, but none for mothers."

Anna began to lobby prominent businessmen like John Wannamaker, and politicians including Presidents Taft and Roosevelt to support her campaign to create a special day to honor mothers. At one of the first services organized to celebrate Anna's mother in 1908, at her church in West Virginia, Anna handed out her mother's favorite flower, the white carnation. Five years later, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution calling for officials of the federal government to wear white carnations on Mother's Day. In 1914 Anna's hard work paid off when Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day as a national holiday.

At first, people observed Mother's Day by attending church, writing letters to their mothers, and eventually, by sending cards, presents, and flowers. With the increasing gift-giving activity associated with Mother's Day, Anna Jarvis became enraged. She believed that the day's sentiment was being sacrificed at the expense of greed and profit. In 1923 she filed a lawsuit to stop a Mother's Day festival, and was even arrested for disturbing the peace at a convention selling carnations for a war mother's group. Before her death in 1948, Jarvis is said to have confessed that she regretted ever starting the mother's day tradition.

Despite Jarvis's misgivings, Mother's Day has flourished in the United States. In fact, the second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year to dine out, and telephone lines record their highest traffic, as sons and daughters everywhere take advantage of this day to honor and to express appreciation of their mothers.

So this Mother's Day make sure you take a moment to tell your mother how much she means to you.
For those of you who have suffered the loss of your mother we are very sorry for your loss and encourage you to spend the day with your memories.  We offer a wide assortment of memorials that will let you express your love.

We will post some great pictures later today of our Mother's Day 2010 collection!  Thank you for stopping in.
